Synopsis[]
Sharpe returns to England to unravel the truth behind the bewildering decree from Lord Fenner that the South Essex Battalion is to be disbanded. But to expose the truth, Sharpe must battle with tyrannical officers and shadowy assassins, as he uncovers a trail of deceit, duplicity, and corruption leading all the way to Lord Fenner himself.
