Corporal Gaston is the ordonnance or batman for General Calvet.
In Sharpe's Siege, he retreats from the fort held by Sharpe and his men, and informs the general that the quick lime attack from the defenders was as bad as anything they suffered in Russia.
In Sharpe's Mission, he pretends to have eaten poison mushrooms to make a point, and then executes Colonel Cresson for his General.
In Sharpe's Revenge, he and the General tracked down William Frederickson, and demands he take them to Richard Sharpe, whom they thought guilty of stealing Bonaparte's treasury. They believed Frederickson, however, when he told them it had been Ducos to take the treasure, and threw in with the two riflemen to retrieve it.
